Software Developer - Applications Layer Development (KTP Associate)
30 months fixed term contract

Salary: £20,000 p.a. plus £5,000, individual training budget and higher degree registration.

Scout7 are a vibrant, well established Company providing software and infrastructure to Professional Football Clubs for use in their Recruitment, Analysis and Player development Programs. With close to 125 clients in the UK and Europe, Scout7 are at the forefront of technology in football.

As part of ongoing commitment to delivering quality products to the football industry the company in partnership with Aston University are embarking on projects for the next evolution of technology solutions. An integral part of this program is the establishment of two, 30 month, KTP Associate positions within a single Knowledge Transfer Partnership.

Supported by Aston University, the project involves designing and developing products and services in an n-tier, Web 2.0, Service Oriented Architecture framework for Scout7 Ltd's products, creating a new business model and opportunities to exploit new markets. The Application Layer Development role will focus on ‘front end' applications, and will work closely with the ‘back end' data warehouse role.

The project takes the form of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (
http://www.ktponline.org.uk), which provides extensive practical and formal training and the availability of support from experienced mentors, from both Scout 7 and Aston University. KTP aims to help businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK Knowledge Base. This position is part-funded by Advantage West Midlands, the European Regional Development Fund and the Technology Strategy Board.

The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate with a good honours degree in Computer Science or related subject and be able to demonstrate practical experience (e.g. direct work experience, a suitable placement during their degree programme, or a company / application based final year project) in programming and software development. Experience in web service development and/or distributed computing would be an advantage, however candidates with a passionate interest in this field with a demonstrable project portfolio are also encouraged.

Experience of the .NET Framework/C#/ASP.NET 2+ would be considered a major advantage and you would be expected to complete a simple C#, C++, or java program, demonstrating your skills. Any exposure to n-Tiered and/or XP (Extreme Programming) development, and/or working with an Agile methodology, would also be desirable along with OOP and Design Pattern exposure.

The candidate should be communicative, inquisitive, a good team worker and demonstrate completing and delivering software projects. You should be able to communicate a vision to other developers and potential users. You will also be flexible and responsive to user requirements and ideas. You must show a high level of attention to detail and willingness to apply yourself to complex software development bringing both rigour and imagination to pragmatic solutions.

In addition you should be well organised, self-motivated, with the ability to interact with staff at all levels and to work independently or as part of a team. Due to the location of the company own transport will be required along with permission to work within the EU. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to register for an MSc / MPhil and for a Diploma in Management.

The project, in the evolving field of service oriented computing, will challenge the associate intellectually. He/she will create (and influence the Scout7 team to use) new coding standards and quality control systems; proving and testing these systems through the development of applications to connect to the data warehouse system developed in the first project.

He/she will gain experience of working within demanding business constraints and timescales, and will gain commercial exposure within the Scout7 development team developing and costing new business models for innovative services. He/she will gain an appreciation of business planning and risk assessment, plus skills in project management, as well as the obvious software engineering, programming, testing and launch of an operational product.
